On Tuesday, Jan. 15, MPAC joined 62 national faith-based, security and advocacy organizations in sending a letter to the Senate urging all members to oppose legislation, Senate Bill 1881 "Nuclear Weapon Free Iran Act of 2013," which seeks to impose new sanctions against Iran.

MPAC announced it will partner with the Arab American Association of New York (AAANY) for its Spring 2014 Research Fellowship, which will document the impact of surveillance on Muslim New Yorkers. Specifically, the fellowship will look at how the civic engagement and political mobilization of targeted communities have been impacted. -

Yesterday, incoming New York Mayor Bill de Blasio announced his selection of William Bratton as his choice for NYPD Commissioner. Bratton will take the helm of the nation’s largest police force for a second time, after also serving as the top cop in Los Angeles and Boston. De Blasio praised Bratton, saying, “He knows what it takes to keep a city safe and make communities full partners in the mission.” -

MPAC welcomed the nuclear deal reached between the United States, the Islamic Republic of Iran and the international community last night, calling it “a historic first step in preventing further conflict in an already troubled region.” -

This week, the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs held the nomination hearing of Jeh Johnson to be considered as the fourth Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security. Johnson, a former top lawyer for the Department of Defense, will have to oversee the missions of DHS, including: preventing terrorism and enhancing security; securing and managing America’s borders; enforcing and administering immigration laws; safeguarding and securing cyberspace; and ensuring resilience to disasters. -

In 2013, the number of American Muslims in visibly appointed positions is grossly out of sync with the number of those who are politically and civically active all around the country. Yes, there are American Muslims serving in Congress, federal agencies from the Department of Homeland Security to the Department of Education and the White House; yet high level appointments at the federal level remain elusive. Why haven’t American Muslims’ civic and political engagement translated to appointed positions? -

Earlier this week, MPAC sent a letter to Transportation Security Administration (TSA) Director John Pistole offering condolences following the shooting last week at Los Angeles International Airport that left one TSA officer dead and wounded six others. -

Tuesday, Oct. 1, at 12:01 a.m., our nation experienced its first federal government shutdown in 17 years. The shutdown has far-reaching consequences, with more than 800,000 federal workers facing furlough. MPAC stands with the thousand of workers having to maneuver through this troubling time and the millions who will suffer from the rippling effect it will have on their lives. The government shutdown is an inexcusable act by a government that is the strongest in the world. -

With the latest attacks in Nairobi, Kenya, by the al-Qaeda-affiliated group Al-Shabaab, American national security circles are once again turning their attention to the Somalia-based group and the threat it poses both domestically and internationally. Media pundits also have shifted their focus from research to rabble-rousing. -
